A rebellious young man is drawn to a gifted classical singer considerably older than him, while, unknown to him, her daughter becomes attached to his father. When the two relationships come to light, the four are caught in a tangle of generations that tests every family loyalty. Ek Nai Paheli ("a new riddle") is K. Balachander's Hindi version of his celebrated Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal (1975), in which Kamal Haasan had played the same part; here he is paired with Hema Malini, with Raaj Kumar and Padmini Kolhapure completing the quartet. The original was known for its bold premise and its music, and the Hindi remake brought the story to a wider audience with a score by Laxmikant–Pyarelal.
