A young mariachi walks into a dusty town hoping to find work as a musician. On the same day, a killer named Azul escapes from prison and comes looking for Moco, the drug boss who betrayed him, carrying his weapons in a guitar case. Moco's men only know to look for a man in black with a guitar, and the gentle musician suddenly finds himself running for his life, helped by a bar owner named Domino. Robert Rodriguez made El Mariachi for about seven thousand dollars, part of which he raised by volunteering for a medical research study, and shot it in the Mexican town of Ciudad Acuna with friends as cast and crew. Picked up by a Hollywood studio, it won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and launched his career, leading to the sequels Desperado and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
