Ela has given her life to a secret revolutionary group fighting British rule, and has vowed never to marry. Then she meets Atin, a sensitive, poetic young man who joins the movement largely because of her. As the group turns harder and more suspicious, their love comes into conflict with loyalty, ideology and the demands of a leader who sees people only as tools. Elar Char Adhyay ("Ela's four chapters") is an adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's 1934 novel Char Adhyay, one of his most debated works for its questioning of violent nationalism. Director Bappaditya Bandopadhyay tells it in four parts, with Paoli Dam and Indraneil Sengupta as the doomed lovers and a carefully recreated period setting.
