English Vinglish (2012)

Shashi Godbole runs a small laddoo business from home and runs her household with love, but her husband and teenage daughter tease her for her poor English, and the jokes sting more than they know. When she is sent ahead to New York to help with her niece's wedding, a humiliating moment at a café pushes her to enrol, secretly, in a four-week spoken-English class full of other outsiders, including a gentle French chef, Laurent. The film is a warm, funny and quietly moving portrait of a woman reclaiming her self-respect. English Vinglish marked Sridevi's return to films after 15 years and was Gauri Shinde's debut as director, inspired in part by her own mother. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Amit Trivedi's songs became popular.
