Escape from Taliban (2003)

A Bengali woman falls in love with an Afghan man, marries him and moves with him to his homeland. After the Taliban take power, life in her husband's village becomes a prison: her freedom vanishes, her work is forbidden and she is in danger simply for speaking her mind. Determined to return to India, she attempts an escape. The film is based on the memoir of Sushmita Banerjee, who wrote about her own experience in Afghanistan, and gives Manisha Koirala one of the most demanding roles of her later career. It is a sober, harrowing drama about courage under oppression.
