Kunjithapatham has been teased his whole life for his long, old-fashioned name, which his family chose on an astrologer's advice. Fed up, he changes it to Harish, but the new name brings fresh trouble and an embarrassing exposure in front of Geetha, the teacher he loves. Stung, he resolves to make his name mean something by winning the Chennai marathon, and under the training of Valli, a former athlete with a story of her own, he begins to run. Ethir Neechal ("swimming against the tide") was Dhanush's first production and the debut of director Durai Senthilkumar, and it helped make Sivakarthikeyan a lead star. Anirudh's soundtrack included "Local Boys", featuring Dhanush and Nayanthara in a special song.
