A simple girl from an Indian village marries a man who works in France and moves with him to the outskirts of Paris. Cut off from everyone she knows, unable to speak the language and kept under her husband's control, she soon discovers that he has deceived her in the worst possible way. The forty-seven days of the title are the time it takes her to find the courage, and the help, to fight back. K. Balachander made the film simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil (as 47 Natkal), adapting a novel by Sivasankari, and shot much of it in France. It is remembered for casting a young Chiranjeevi against type as the manipulative husband, with Jaya Prada as the wife and Sarath Babu as the man who helps her.
