Dahek (1999)

In a small town where the two communities live side by side but never quite trust each other, a Hindu young man and a Muslim young woman fall in love. As political agitators stir up tension and the town edges towards a riot, their relationship becomes a target, and they must decide whether love can survive when everyone around them is taking sides. Dahek ("burning") stars Akshaye Khanna and Sonali Bendre and was directed by Lateef Binny. Released in the late 1990s, it is one of a number of Hindi films of that time that used a cross-community romance to speak about communal violence.
