Hagalu vesha is a Karnataka folk tradition in which performers roam villages in daytime disguises, playing gods, kings or characters for the crowds. In Baraguru Ramachandrappa's period film, Shiva Rajkumar plays such a performer during the colonial era, whose art and wanderings bring him into the struggle against British rule, using disguise and the people's trust as weapons of resistance. Baraguru, a noted writer and filmmaker, uses the story to celebrate rural Kannada culture alongside the freedom struggle. It stands out among Shiva Rajkumar's films for its folk setting, period detail and serious themes.
