Mala lives a contented life with her husband Amar and their little son until violence takes Amar away. Left alone, she is helped by Amar's kind friend Prakash, and the closeness between them sets tongues wagging in a society with fixed ideas about what a widow may and may not do. The film argues, with feeling rather than lectures, for a widow's right to a new life. Ek Hi Rasta was the first production of B. R. Chopra's own banner, B. R. Films, which went on to make Naya Daur, Waqt and Gumrah. Meena Kumari brings her famous restraint to Mala, while a young Sunil Dutt and the dependable Ashok Kumar complete the triangle, with Hemant Kumar's music in support.
