Bajrangbali (1976)

Bajrangbali retells episodes from the Ramayana with Hanuman at the centre: his meeting with Rama and Lakshmana, his unwavering devotion, his leap across the sea in search of the abducted Sita, the burning of Lanka and his feats in the war against Ravana. Dara Singh, the wrestler-turned-actor, plays Hanuman, a role with which he became so closely identified that he played it again, most famously in Ramanand Sagar's television Ramayan in the late 1980s. Biswajeet plays Rama and Moushumi Chatterjee plays Sita. Directed by Chandrakant, a specialist in mythological films, it is a colourful devotional spectacle made with the trick effects of its time.
