Barfi! (2012)

Murphy, called Barfi because that is how he says his own name, is deaf and mute, cheerful and endlessly inventive, and the most lovable troublemaker in Darjeeling. He falls for Shruti, a newcomer engaged to another man, who must choose between her heart and a safe life. Years later his path crosses with Jhilmil, a young autistic woman from a wealthy family, and a disappearance draws police, kidnapping and the two women's stories together. Told in shifting timelines with very little dialogue, the film borrows the spirit of Chaplin and Keaton for its silent comedy. Barfi! was India's official entry for the Academy Awards, won the Filmfare Award for Best Film, and is remembered for Pritam's songs such as "Phir Le Aaya Dil" and for Ileana D'Cruz's Hindi debut.
