Major Mahadevan, a seasoned officer of the National Security Guard, carries a private grief but throws himself into every operation. When militants in Kashmir take civilians hostage, he and his commandos, including a young soldier from Tamil Nadu, are sent in to a long, tense operation in a crowded residential area where any mistake will cost innocent lives. Keerthi Chakra was the directorial debut of Major Ravi, a former army officer who based the story on operations he had experienced, and it was praised for its realistic depiction of counter-insurgency combat. It began a series of films with Mohanlal as Major Mahadevan, followed by Kurukshetra, Kandahar and 1971: Beyond Borders. Jiiva's role marked his Malayalam debut.
