Pran, a sensitive violinist, and his friend Gopal, a carefree flirt, travel to the hills of Kashmir. Pran falls deeply for Reshma, a boatman's daughter, and promises to return for her, but her father has other plans. Gopal meanwhile charms Neela, a simple shepherd girl, with no intention of keeping his word. The two love stories run side by side toward very different ends. Barsaat was Raj Kapoor's first big hit as director and the first triumph of his R.K. Films banner, whose famous logo was inspired by an image from this film. It also marked the debut of composers Shankar-Jaikishan and lyricists Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri, and of Nimmi. Songs such as "Barsaat Mein Humse Mile Tum" and "Jiya Beqarar Hai" made it one of the great musicals of the era.
