Muthuveerappan is a talented singer from a village who loves his childhood sweetheart. When he goes to the city to try his luck in music, a successful woman helps him become a star, and circumstances push him into marrying her as well. Now he has two wives in two homes, and keeping the arrangement secret takes ever more desperate lies and comic contortions. Suresh Krissna's comedy is a remake of the Telugu hit Allari Mogudu (1992) and gave Rajinikanth a rare chance to play broad comedy alongside two heroines, Meena and Roja. Ilaiyaraaja's songs, sung by the hero in the story, were a big part of its success. It is known in Hindi as Shankar Dada, though it is a family comedy rather than an action film.
