Noor is a young apprentice craftsman in Srinagar when he is taken into the grand house of Begum Hazrat, a reclusive, embittered woman, and falls in love with her beautiful and distant daughter Firdaus. Years later, Noor has become a promising artist in Delhi, helped by an unknown patron, and when Firdaus re-enters his life, his old obsession returns, along with the Begum's strange hold over them both. Fitoor ("obsession") is an Indian adaptation of Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, with Tabu as its version of Miss Havisham. It is remembered for Anay Goswamy's lush images of Kashmir in winter and autumn and Amit Trivedi's soundtrack. Rekha was originally cast as the Begum before Tabu took over.
