Durga is a decent young man in Vijayawada who keeps away from the world of his elder brother, a powerful local leader. When his brother is murdered by a ruthless politician, Durga is pulled into the family's role and has to become the man everyone fears, losing his peace and the woman he loves in the process. Ram Gopal Varma's crime drama, clearly inspired by The Godfather, was praised for its realism and is considered one of the key Telugu films of the 1990s. Jagapathi Babu's intense lead performance changed his career, and the song Nigggadeesi Adugu, a scathing lyric by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, became one of the most celebrated songs in Telugu cinema. The film won several Nandi Awards.
