Raja is the happy-go-lucky youngest brother in a middle-class family, out of work and spending his days with a gang of equally unemployed friends. His eldest brother, a hard-working, honest man, falls foul of a ring of powerful criminals, and the family is shattered. Raja, wrongly blamed and pushed out, turns his band of friends into a force against the villains, while romancing a feisty young woman played by Vijayashanti. Gang Leader was one of Chiranjeevi's biggest hits of the early 1990s, with energetic dances and Bappi Lahiri's chartbusters, including "Vaana Vaana Velluvaye". Chiranjeevi himself starred in the Hindi remake, Aaj Ka Goonda Raaj (1992).
