Ganga and Jamuna are brothers raised by their widowed mother in a village ruled by a greedy landlord. Ganga works hard so that the younger Jamuna can study in the city, but the landlord's cruelty and a false accusation drive Ganga to the ravines, where he becomes an outlaw. Jamuna, meanwhile, becomes a police officer, and the bond between the brothers is tested as the law closes in. Dilip Kumar wrote and produced the film as well as playing Ganga, speaking a rustic Awadhi-Bhojpuri dialect, and Vyjayanthimala's spirited Dhanno won her the Filmfare award for Best Actress. Naushad's music, with songs such as 'Nain Lad Jaihen' and 'Do Hanson Ka Joda', remains much loved. Filmed in Technicolor, Ganga Jamuna was a huge hit, and its brothers-on-opposite-sides-of-the-law story inspired later classics, notably Deewaar.
