Gattu (2011)

Gattu is a scrappy orphan who works in his uncle's junk shop in the small town of Roorkee and lives for kite flying. Over the town's rooftops one black kite, called Kali, cuts down every rival, and nobody knows who flies it. Convinced he needs the highest roof in town to beat it, Gattu sneaks into the local school by posing as a student, bluffing his way through lessons and classmates in pursuit of his single goal. Produced by the Children's Film Society, India, Rajan Khosa's film was shot on location with non-professional actors, and Mohammad Samad, a local boy, gives a lively, unaffected performance. It travelled to international festivals, including the children's section at Berlin, and is an affectionate picture of small-town childhood.
