Geethanjali (2014)

Srinivas has come to Hyderabad dreaming of directing a film. To win over a producer he narrates a ghost story, and as he talks we see it unfold: a cheap flat that nobody else will rent, strange happenings at night, and a young woman named Geethanjali whose story is tied to the place. Anjali plays a double role at the heart of the mystery, and the film keeps switching between spooky set-pieces and the comedy of a struggling filmmaker and his hangers-on. Geethanjali was a surprise success in 2014 and helped kick off the wave of Telugu horror comedies that followed. Comedian Srinivasa Reddy got a rare lead role, Brahmanandam has a memorable turn as a vain film director, and a sequel, Geethanjali Malli Vachindi, followed in 2024.
