Gippi (2013)

Gurpreet, known as Gippi, is fourteen, overweight, unsure of herself and living in Shimla with her divorced mother and her little brother. School is a daily trial: she is teased about her looks, her crush hardly notices her, and the glamorous class queen Shamira seems to have everything. Tired of feeling invisible, Gippi decides to stand up for herself and challenge Shamira, discovering along the way who her real friends are. Sonam Nair's debut is a gentle, funny coming-of-age story about body image, first crushes and growing confidence, with a likeable lead performance from newcomer Riya Vij and warm support from Divya Dutta as her mother. It was produced by Karan Johar and shot in the hill town of Shimla.
