Description

Hori is a poor peasant in a north Indian village, bowed down by debt to moneylenders, landlords and priests, whose one great wish is to own a cow, the symbol of dignity and blessing in his world. His wife Dhaniya is sharper and more defiant, and their son Gobar is restless to escape to the city. As Hori's small hopes collide with the crushing demands of the system around him, his story becomes a portrait of an entire rural society. Godaan adapts Munshi Premchand's 1936 novel, considered a landmark of Hindi literature, with Raaj Kumar cast against type as the humble Hori. Its music was composed by sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, one of his few Hindi film scores.
