Evelyn is a delicate, sickly young woman engaged to a young doctor, and she comes to recover at the seaside home of his brother Douglas, an artist, and his loving family. She seems sweet and in need of protection, but she soon falls for Douglas and begins to plant suspicion and jealousy throughout the household, setting husband against wife and turning the servants and the child against one another. Only the sharp Aunt Martha starts to see what is happening. Guest in the House is a wartime psychological drama based on a stage play, with a young Anne Baxter, before her fame in All About Eve, playing a quiet manipulator who becomes more chilling as the film goes on.
