Raju is a smooth-talking guide in Udaipur. When the archaeologist Marco arrives with his wife Rosie, a gifted dancer whose husband has no time for her art, Raju encourages her to follow her passion. Their relationship scandalises society, and Rosie's rise to fame brings success, jealousy and Raju's own undoing; later, by chance, a village mistakes him for a holy man. Based on R. K. Narayan's novel The Guide, Vijay Anand's film is regarded as one of the finest Hindi films ever made. S. D. Burman's soundtrack, with songs such as "Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai", "Gaata Rahe Mera Dil" and "Piya Tose Naina Laage Re", is a landmark. Guide swept the major Filmfare Awards, was India's entry for the Academy Awards, and was also made in a separate English version.
