Gurukant Desai leaves his Gujarat village for a job in Turkey, then comes home with big dreams and little money. He marries the spirited Sujata, moves to Bombay and breaks into the closed world of the textile trade, using charm, nerve and a talent for working the system. As his company grows into a giant owned by millions of small shareholders, his methods attract the attention of Manik Dasgupta, a newspaper editor who once helped him, and a young journalist sets out to expose him. Mani Ratnam's film is widely seen as loosely inspired by the rise of Dhirubhai Ambani. A. R. Rahman's soundtrack, with Gulzar's lyrics, was a major hit, including Tere Bina, Barso Re and Mayya Mayya, and Abhishek Bachchan's performance is among his best. He and Aishwarya Rai married a few months after its release.
