Aditya was a gifted boxer whose career was wrecked by politics, and as a coach he has made more enemies than champions. Banished to a posting in Visakhapatnam, he goes to watch a local bout and is unimpressed by the boxer, Lux, but riveted by her younger sister Rami, a fish seller with a temper and a punch to match. He sets out to turn her into a champion, a relationship full of fights, sulks and grudging respect, while officials who resent him wait for a chance to bring them both down. Guru is the Telugu remake of Sudha Kongara's own Irudhi Suttru and Saala Khadoos (2016), with Ritika Singh, a real-life kickboxer, reprising her award-winning role. Venkatesh, playing against his family-hero image, trained for the part and also sang a song in the film, Jingidi.
