After his father dies, young Arjun moves to Mumbai with his mother and takes a job at a tea stall to help pay the bills. Every night he watches children from wealthier homes training on roller skates at a nearby ground, and he longs to join them. Lucky, their idealistic coach, notices the boy's hunger and decides to train him, while Arjun's friends from the street, a group of child workers, cobble together a pair of skates from scrap. The film follows his preparation for a state competition and the obstacles of poverty, work and family. Amole Gupte, who wrote Taare Zameen Par and made Stanley Ka Dabba, again cast his son Partho Gupte, and the film is a warm, rousing children's sports story with a quiet message about child labour.
