Heera Moti (1959)

Heera and Moti are a pair of bullocks, loyal and inseparable, and for the poor farmer who owns them they are almost family. When a greedy, scheming moneylender casts his eye on the farmer's land and his animals, the family's struggle to survive becomes a fight for dignity, and the two bullocks find themselves at the centre of it. Heera Moti is a 1959 Hindi village drama based on Munshi Premchand's much-loved story Do Bailon Ki Katha ("the tale of two bullocks"), with Balraj Sahni, the great actor of rural and socially conscious cinema, as the farmer and Nirupa Roy as his wife. It is a gentle, humane film in the tradition of 1950s social cinema.
