Days before her lavish wedding, Veera, the daughter of a wealthy Delhi family, slips out for a late-night drive and is abducted in a petrol-station robbery by a gang led by the hard, brooding Mahabir. When the gang learns how powerful her father is, they decide to keep moving, and a long road journey begins through Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. To her captors' bewilderment, Veera starts to feel freer in captivity than she ever did at home, and an unusual bond grows between the two damaged people. Imtiaz Ali shot the film on real highways and remote locations with a small crew. A. R. Rahman's soundtrack, including "Patakha Guddi" and "Sooha Saha", was acclaimed, and Alia Bhatt's performance won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.
