Hulla (2008)

Raj and his wife have just bought a flat in a Mumbai housing society, the reward for years of work. There is one problem: every night the watchman does his rounds blowing a whistle, and Raj cannot sleep. His polite complaints get nowhere, the society's office-bearers have their own ideas about how things should be run, and the small irritation grows into an obsession that begins to eat into his job, his marriage and his sense of himself. Jaideep Varma's debut feature is a dry, observational satire of urban middle-class life, of the petty politics of housing societies and of how insomnia can make a reasonable man unreasonable. Rajat Kapoor and Sushant Singh lead the cast. Made on a modest budget, it was well liked by critics for its wit and its accurate eye for Mumbai flat life.
