Lingesan is a big-hearted bodybuilder from a Chennai neighbourhood who dreams of becoming Mr India. He also adores Diya, a famous model, from afar. When she needs a new face for an advertising campaign, he gets his chance, and the shy strongman is transformed into the stylish model Lee, winning fame and her affection. But his rise angers people in the fashion business, and something terrible is done to him. S. Shankar's lavish romantic thriller is built around Vikram's extraordinary physical commitment: he bulked up as a bodybuilder and lost a great deal of weight for other scenes, with prosthetic work by New Zealand's Weta Workshop. Shot partly in China, with P. C. Sreeram's photography and A. R. Rahman's songs, it was one of the most expensive Indian films of its time.
