Ilaignan ("Youth") is a period drama about exploited workers and the young man who refuses to accept their misery. In a town in an earlier era, labourers toil for a cruel and powerful employer, and the hero, angry at the injustice he sees around him, begins to organise resistance, at great personal risk. Love stories with the characters played by Meera Jasmine and Namitha run alongside the struggle. The film is notable as one of the screenplays written by M. Karunanidhi, the veteran screenwriter and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, whose fondness for fiery dialogue on social justice is evident throughout. It starred lyricist Pa. Vijay in the lead and was directed by Suresh Krissna, best known for Rajinikanth's Baashha.
