Venu, an honest young man of modest means, falls in love with Radha, the daughter of a wealthy household, and marries her on the condition that he live with her family as an illarikam son-in-law. In the big house he is soon looked down on, and a greedy relative who has his own designs on the family's wealth works to humiliate him and drive a wedge between husband and wife. Venu has to use his wits to expose the plotter and win back his dignity. Illarikam is one of the well-loved family comedies of 1950s Telugu cinema, pairing Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Jamuna, with comedian Relangi in support. Its success led director T. Prakash Rao to remake it in Hindi as Sasural (1961), with Rajendra Kumar and B. Saroja Devi.
