Alex, a novelist whose debut book is about a serial killer, takes his girlfriend Archana, a lawyer, on a weekend drive. Their car breaks down in the rain on a remote road, and they ask for help at an isolated old house where a man named Unni lets them in. The evening becomes a game of suspicion: Unni seems strangely interested in Alex's book, there is a story about a killer still at large, and soon Archana cannot be sure which of the two men to fear. Irul (darkness) is a compact three-character thriller set almost entirely inside the house over one night, made during the pandemic with a tiny cast. It was the debut of director Naseef Yusuf Izuddin, and it gives Fahadh Faasil and Soubin Shahir a rare chance to play off each other in a tense chamber piece.
