Ajay is a wealthy, mischievous boy whose pranks have made him the terror of his family. He is sent off to a boarding school, where he keeps up his rebellion until a new teacher, Shekhar, arrives with ideas very different from the strict old masters. Shekhar teaches through trust, play and stories of India's freedom struggle, and slowly wins the boy over, helped by Ajay's friendship with a disabled classmate. Jagriti (Awakening) is a beloved children's film that won the Filmfare award for Best Film. Its patriotic songs by Kavi Pradeep and Hemant Kumar, Aao Bachcho Tumhe Dikhayen, De Di Humein Azadi and Hum Laye Hain Toofan Se Kishti Nikal Ke, are still sung in Indian schools. Pakistan remade it as Bedari (1957).
