On a quiet stretch of the Line of Control, soldiers on both sides are startled when a hen wanders over the border. What should be a trivial matter swells into a diplomatic incident, with guns pointed, tempers rising and the media scenting a war. To defuse it, a peace committee of well-known personalities is put together, and the negotiators turn out to be more interested in their own egos, quarrels and television appearances than in the hen. Ranjit Kapoor, the playwright and screenwriter best known for co-writing Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, directs this broad political satire, and it gathers a cast of veteran character actors led by Om Puri, Annu Kapoor, Satish Kaushik and Seema Biswas. Its target is less Pakistan than Indian public life, with its talk shows, committees and grandstanding.
