Durga Devi is a wealthy, iron-willed businesswoman who looks down on anyone without money, and she is furious when her daughter Rekha falls for Raja, a cheeky young man from an ordinary family. Raja marries Rekha anyway and moves into the household, where he and his mother-in-law fight a long, comic war of wits, while some of Durga Devi's own associates are quietly working to cheat her. Jamai Raja is a Hindi remake of the Telugu hit Attaku Yamudu Ammayiki Mogudu, made by the same director, A. Kodandarami Reddy. It pairs Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit at the height of their popularity, with Hema Malini clearly enjoying the role of the haughty saas.
