Janaan (2016)

Meena has grown up in Canada, and her trip back to her extended family in Pakistan's Swat valley for a cousin's wedding is meant to be a happy reunion. Instead she is drawn into a romance with Asfandyar, a local man with strong views of his own, while family loyalties, an expected match and a rival suitor complicate what everyone wants for her. Janaan is a romantic comedy-drama that leans heavily on its setting: it was one of the few mainstream Pakistani films of its time to be shot extensively in Swat and to put Pashtun family life at its centre, and its mountain landscapes are a major part of its appeal. It marked the film debut of Hania Aamir, who later became a leading television star, and was a hit release in 2016.
