Japanil Kalyanaraman is the sequel to the 1979 hit Kalyanaraman, in which Kamal Haasan played a gentle, buck-toothed simpleton who comes back as a ghost to protect his loved ones. This time the story moves to Japan, where Kamal's characters, the human Raman and the ghostly Kalyanaraman, are caught up with crooks, misunderstandings and a romance with Radha, and the ghost's invisible mischief becomes the film's main weapon. Much of it was shot in Japan, which was a novelty for Tamil audiences in the mid-1980s, and the sights of Tokyo are part of the attraction. Directed by S. P. Muthuraman, who made many of Rajinikanth's and Kamal's commercial hits, it has songs by Ilaiyaraaja and comic support from Satyaraj, then still playing villains and character parts.
