Sangeeta is the only earning member of a large family. Her father has abandoned them and her brother is a drunk, so she works long hours to feed her mother, siblings and her brother's family, and keeps postponing her own marriage. Every time she comes close to a life of her own, a new family duty pulls her back, and the people she sacrifices for rarely notice. Jeevan Dhaara is a Hindi version of K. Balachander's acclaimed Tamil film Aval Oru Thodar Kathai, made by T. Rama Rao, who directed many family dramas in Hindi and Telugu. Rekha, at the peak of her career after Umrao Jaan, gives a restrained performance in a role far from her glamorous image, with Raj Babbar and Amol Palekar in support.
