Saravanan, a school dropout from a village who reads voraciously, works at a juice shop in Chennai and lives as a lodger in a house owned by an elderly couple with a blind daughter. Short of money and stung by a break-up, he and his friend Mani steal the family's gold. Afterwards Saravanan begins to notice uncanny parallels between his own life and the past of the family he has wronged, and becomes convinced that some cycle of fate is playing out through him. Jiivi is a small Tamil thriller that won a strong following through word of mouth for its clever writing, which mixes crime with ideas about chance and destiny. Its success led to a sequel, Jiivi 2, in 2022.
