Jagdish Tyagi, known as Jolly, is a struggling lawyer from Meerut who moves to Delhi hoping for one big case. He finds it in a hit-and-run in which a luxury car ran over pavement dwellers and the wealthy accused walked free, defended by the polished, ruthless Tejinder Rajpal. What begins as Jolly's bid for publicity becomes a genuine fight for justice, played out before a weary, sharp-eyed judge. Subhash Kapoor's satire was loosely inspired by real Delhi hit-and-run cases and paints a funny, pointed picture of the Indian lower courts. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, and Saurabh Shukla won Best Supporting Actor as the judge. It led to Jolly LLB 2 with Akshay Kumar and was remade in Tamil as Manithan.
