Varun, an Indian Air Force pilot, is shot down during the Kargil conflict of 1999 and held in a prisoner-of-war camp in Pakistan. While he and his fellow prisoners plan a dangerous escape, he keeps returning in his mind to Leela, a young doctor he met in Srinagar after an accident: their passionate romance, his arrogance, the hurt he caused her and the question of whether he can ever change. Kaatru Veliyidai (in the open air) is a Mani Ratnam love story set against the mountains of Kashmir and Ladakh, with much of it shot in Ladakh. A. R. Rahman's score won him the National Film Award for Best Music Direction, and Shashaa Tirupati won Best Female Playback Singer for the song Vaan Varuvaan. Ravi Varman's cinematography of the snowy landscapes was widely praised.
