Kamali loses her bag, with all her certificates, on a train journey. Surya, a young man working in Jaipur, finds it and posts it back to her, and her letter of thanks begins a correspondence that slowly turns into love, even though the two have never met. They promise to keep it that way until the right moment, and the film builds its emotion on their near-meetings and the people who try to come between them. Agathiyan's Kadhal Kottai, 'the castle of love', was a huge hit and a landmark of 1990s Tamil romance, helping establish Ajith as a romantic star. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, while Agathiyan won National Awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Deva's songs were hugely popular, and the film was remade in Hindi as Sirf Tum.
