Shiva is a carefree young mechanic who lives for his friends and his motorbike. When he meets Thilothama, the daughter of a strict household, he falls hard, only to learn that her marriage to another man has already been fixed. Over the course of the film he tries to win her heart without breaking every rule around her, aided by a kindly old man who runs a mess, played by the legendary composer M. S. Viswanathan in a rare acting role. Kadhal Mannan ("king of love") was the debut of director Saran, music director Bharadwaj and actress Maanu, and it helped cement Ajith's popularity as a romantic hero in the late 1990s. Its songs were hits.
