Jeeva, a carefree young man from a Hindu family, meets Mini, the sheltered daughter of a strict Christian household, and what begins as a playful acquaintance turns into deep love. When the families discover the relationship, the reaction is furious, and the couple run away together, only to find that escaping their parents does not bring the peace they expected. Fazil remade his own Malayalam hit Aniyathipraavu (1997), with Shalini repeating her role opposite Vijay, and Ilaiyaraaja's soundtrack became hugely popular. The film was a turning point in Vijay's career, establishing him as a romantic hero, and it won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film. It was later remade in Hindi as Doli Saja Ke Rakhna.
