Kemban is a petty thief in a village on the edge of a forest, where wild elephants often stray into the fields. Hoping for easy money, he and his friend take in a lonely elderly man and pretend to care for him, with an eye on what they can gain from him. But as time passes, the relationship becomes real, and when the old man's fate is caught up with the dangers of the forest, Kemban is forced to choose who he really is. Kalvan ("thief") is directed by the cinematographer P. V. Shankar and stars G. V. Prakash Kumar, also its composer, with veteran director Bharathiraja in a central acting role and Ivana as the young woman Kemban loves. The forest and elephant scenes give it a distinctive rural setting.
