John David, a magnetic, talkative stranger, strikes up a conversation with Anandanathan, a man returning home after losing everything in a financial crash in the Gulf. Over a long journey, John tells stories, offers sympathy and draws Anandan out about his past and his family, until it becomes clear that their meeting is no accident and that John has his own reasons for seeking him out, linked to a deal that destroyed many lives. Kanal ("embers") is a mystery-thriller written by Anoop Menon, who co-stars, and directed by M. Padmakumar. Much of its tension comes from conversations, slow revelations and Mohanlal's shifting performance, while the story touches on the hardships of Keralites working in the Gulf.
