Kathiresan, a smart small-time crook, breaks out of a Kolkata prison and lands in Chennai, where he finds a man who looks exactly like him lying wounded: Jeevanandham, who has spent years fighting a multinational that wants to take over the water of his drought-hit village. Kathiresan swaps places with him for his own reasons, but once he sees the old farmers who are counting on Jeeva, the con becomes a cause, and he takes on the corporation's ruthless head with a thief's cunning. Kaththi ("knife") gave Vijay one of his biggest hits, with Anirudh's songs and a celebrated coin-tossing fight scene. Its theme of farmers' suicides and corporate water grabs stirred discussion, and it was remade in Telugu as Khaidi No. 150, Chiranjeevi's comeback film. It also marked Neil Nitin Mukesh's Tamil debut.
